The 1856 Petzval lenses produced by Dietzler had a diameter of 15 cm and a weight of 15 kg, with which one could make portraits measuring 33 by 42 cm.

The Chevalier lens used two cemented double lenses, but was immediately replaced by the Petzval lens, so that the Petzval " Portr�tlinse " was the first cemented lens in widespread use.

The Petzval lens is one design which has significant amount of field curvature, images taken with the lens are very sharp in the centre, but at greater angles the image is out of focus.

Designed solely for portraiture, this arrangement produced a far brighter image than a Chevalier lens, or even the later Petzval lens, but image quality was only marginal and the design was only practical for use with small plates.
